Retired "Mountie" wins Lotto BC/49 Jackpot
Kamloops, B.C., October 15, 2008 – A former RCMP Staff Sergeant and his wife are $2 million richer, after matching six out of six numbers to win last Wednesday's BC/49 Jackpot.
Retired couple Harry and Annie Kryhul purchased their lucky ticket at South Main Market on Penticton's Main Street, but say they may have forgotten to play altogether had it not been for their love of yogurt.
"I was picking up some groceries," seventy-six-year-old Harry explained. "When I left the store I realized that I had forgotten to buy yogurt, so I went back inside. The clerk rang it in and said, 'That'll be $6.49'."
The number so synonymous with Canada's national lottery prompted Harry to try his luck on a Double Play ticket (Lotto 6/49 + BC/49) for the October 8, 2008 draw.
"The next morning I checked our ticket with the winning numbers in the newspaper," said Harry. "I thought it could be a misprint so I ran downstairs to our computer and double-checked it on BCLC's website, and sure enough we'd won. I told my wife that we had matched all six numbers on BC/49, and that we had just won $2 million!"
"We still haven't come down from the ceiling," added seventy-two-year-old Annie.
The couple is now planning to use part of their windfall to go on a trip.
BC/49 is a BC-only lottery game drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 6 p.m. (PST) that gives players a chance to win up to $2 million for only $1. Tickets can be purchased at any BCLC lottery retailer or online at PlayNow.com.
